Since February 1st, the volume of hacker activity seen on HACKNET, NETSENSOR's artificial neural network, has increased dramatically, breaking the barrier of 60,000.
The number of origins known as sources of hacker activity went from 46,377, on February 1st, to 60,907 on February 7th. This represents an increase of 30% in a 6-day period.
This is the highest amount of malicious actors ever seen on HACKNET, which has been active since August 2021.
How did the increase in hacker activity occur?
Detection of hacker movement growth was performed by increasing the number of IP addresses detected by HACKNET with some type of recent hacker activity.
From this, the information was analyzed by NETSENSOR's specialized security team and an appearance of many new IP addresses was identified that, until then, had not been detected with hacker activity.
Blocks of IP addresses belonging to organizations that were not seen.
The large movement of hacking activities originated from blocks of IP addresses belonging to several companies that were previously unseen.
This information brings strong evidence of compromise of new technology structures, belonging to companies that until then were not seen performing any type of malicious activity.
What explains the increase in hacker activity?
The increase in hacker activity could have occurred for different reasons. See the main explanations for phenomena like this:
New IP address blocks under the domain of hacker groups, which may be being used to carry out cyber crimes;
Company equipment being compromised and used for hacking;
Propagation (successful infection) of a new virus or malware on various devices around the world. In these situations, these devices become a kind of robots at the service of cybercriminals.
Where did the detection take place?
Increased hacker activity was detected on the HACKNET network, which has points of presence in 10 countries, spread across 5 continents.
In addition, the increase was also detected in customer networks that use NETSENSOR technologies as part of their line of defense against cyberattacks. In these networks, several exploitation attempts were identified from thousands of IPs in these new blocks.
How was the detection done?
For detection, HACKNET technology was used, which is an artificial neural network focused on cybersecurity. It collects, analyzes and catalogs information about recently detected hacking activities in different parts of the planet.
From this, security analysts can make adjustments and take greater care with new targets that are being searched on the internet.
In addition, a summary of hacking activities is posted daily on the HACKNET website (https://www.hacknet.com.br) – including the services most searched for by hackers, the countries that generated the most hacking activities, the points where these activities were detected and the companies with which these malicious sources are linked.
In the networks of corporate customers, detection was carried out using NETSENSOR technology, based on machine learning.
